Two Ways to Approach TTNS

If you and your physician conclude there are no contraindications to TNS, there are at least two ways to consider:

Approach 1 –

  • Begin in a clinic with FDA-cleared PTNS.
  • If PTNS provides meaningful improvement, decide later whether changing to TTNS offers advantages for your situation.

Approach 2 –

  • Learn about electrode placement, treatment technique, and tracking results
  • Discuss TTNS directly with your physician.
  • If TTNS fits your circumstances, decide whether to begin a TTNS trial.

If you are interested in tibial nerve stimulation but your physician is not comfortable discussing TTNS, consider and discuss PTNS.

PTNS treatments can provide useful information:

  • If PTNS provides meaningful relief, you can continue it for as long as you and your physician consider appropriate.
  • You may later explore whether TTNS could provide similar benefit with treatment at home.
  • Success with PTNS does not guarantee success with TTNS. Lack of success with PTNS does not prove that TTNS would not work.
  • Your experience with PTNS can help inform future decisions about TTNS.
